The Use of Gospel Rap

Many concerts I host I like to hand out CDs of Holy Hip Hop artists with the understanding by that youth that they are getting this music in exchange for one of their parental advisory secular rap CDs. I would like to think that I am not that far removed from young and I remember what I was really seeking when listening to secular music. That same rhythmic desire can be achieved through gospel rap but with words that can change lives rather than destroy them or reinforce negative worldly trends. However, there are many that do not agree with me and solely view gospel rap as rap and just as detrimental to our saved youth as any secular rap could be. What do you think? Should gospel rap be used as a tool to reach our youth or is it just an extension or secular rap?

Word speaks for itself! Music is a universal language...Yet the Word of God is limited to its hearer and even more limited to true belivers in spirit and truth...Point in case...Hearing comes by the word! Sooooo Yes please continue to promote Gospel Rapp. This pass Sunday I was blessed by the Word of God spake by R.I.C.H...Resting In Christ Hands...He Was right on the scripture...check his CD...especially-track called 'Salvation 101' Also my church raised the very infamous Crane and A-1 whose givin the saints of God CD tracks like...'Just give 'em Jesus'

Pat H G... I stand to be corrected: The WORD is never limited ... It shall go forth and accomplish everything that is stated; The Word will not return void.
Also ... Point in case mentioned ...FAITH comes by HEARING THE WORD. . .Not Hearing comes by the Word. . .Yet my point remains the same only when we want to hear will we listen; and only when we listen will we truly hear The WORD! … Further elaborating on the subject matter…
No, I do not feel that Gospel Rapp is an extension of secular music. I feel it is an extension of who we are – As Believers; and where we are As Believers. I feel Gospel Rapp: Believers & Doers are justified by faith trusting & believing in the knowledge of Jesus Christ! My ancestral heritage tells me that barriers of communication were broken down with spiritual, inspiring rhymes, rhythms, and reasons to ‘keep on keeping on’. Yet early compositions of such did not include a 48 track recording studio, nor keyboards with synthesizers…. Evr’ round goes higher and higher. . .Each generation can enhance; and bounce up the beats, and add more instruments however… The message must remain the same! God said He will use the foolish things to confound the wise. So who are we to say "what God won't use-or will use for that matter". A lot of us church folk are too wise for our own good. I believe when God saves u, He saves u with ur past and personality in mind. With that said, we are all sent to bring in certain individual. Some may use straight scripture, some may use their testimony, some may use gospel rap and others use fire and brimstone messages. Our youth are perishing by the moment. This generation is lost. Denise I agree with u, give me a hot beat and I'm good, I can do without all that negative stuff feeding my spirit, so why not give me a hot beat and some positive information to go along with it. One planteth and another one waters and God gives the increase. I believe gospel rap is the seed, then God will still send a messanger to water that seed and It's then between God and that individual-that they allow God to give the increase.

I am praying the Church (Universal Body of Christ) begins to realize the importance of accepting Christian rap/gospel rap. Rap is the number one selling music genre in the secular world, but amongst gospel labels it's almost non existent. why? Most churches don't support it, not realizing the evangelism tool that's in rap music. We have to understand our children are being lost everyday to bad music that supports drugs, premarital sex and a variety of other illicit activities, none of which I feel comfortable letting my children listen to. We must become involved in their lives and understand how to reach them where they are. Gospel rap does just that. I've been blessed to be able to have ministered at many places through gospel rap. I've been on the streets of Baltimore, East St.Louis, St.Louis, Philadelphia and Washington DC using gospel rap as a tool to win souls. I've seen many souls come to Christ as a result of the ministry, so I know first hand it's of God. Remember a kingdom divided will not stand. No one is going to come to Christ by an anti Christ spirit. We can also be using gospel rap as a connection between the young and the old. We need to get out of the mindset, "It's just for the kids", because that separates us. Rap's been around 30 yrs and it's core fan base are parents. The right music can bring families together. The lyrics are clean, the songs glorify God, and the beats are nice. One time in a juvenile detention center I saw over 50 kids give their lives to Christ after 3 songs and a few words, it is POWERFUL tool if done the right way. God bless y'all. Hi Denise.

hip hop be it gospel or other wise is a valid part of african american culture i n the 21st century it is not necessarily a traditional form of expression in today's churches or at least most of them at this point but that will change and yes it is a very powerful tool ---door opener to reach youth for christ . however with hip hop versus more no -hip hop forms of black gospel forms of worship there is a lack of understanding and or communication between old and young as to the power of hip hop and other forms of praise & worship in the church today . its and intergenerational difference

    Grace & Peace
    Good evening

I'm not an expert, but what separates the Godly from the ungodly is the lyrics and the intent of the music. I think that rap and hip-hop in general can have a negative stigma attached to it, but it is, in essence, a creative and poetic art form of storytelling that has evolved immensely from the days of "rappers delight". Within rap, there are many different typoligies in style that talks about many different aspects of life, so I would think that there would be room for one to express themself as a child of God. Secular rap gives the glory to money, power, and other worldly things. If Christian rap artists have the opportunity to give God the glory by way of an artform that has traditionally influenced the opinions of young people, what's wrong with that? If it gets the kids excited about their faith and gets them involved in ministry, I'm all for it.
